Outdoor activities all year round

The area has everything you need for a wonderfully active outdoor holiday; you can enjoy unlimited hiking all year round in the vicinity of Monschau, in the rugged High Fens or in the lovely Eifel, from short detours to full-day hikes.
For those who prefer to explore the Eifel by bike, there is the famous Vennbahn cycle path, which passes Kalterherberg and leads through beautiful countryside. And that with a maximum gradient of only 3%! The beautiful RurUfer cycle path also runs past Kalterherberg, in the valley.

Furthermore, the Eifel and the High Fens are of course great for gravel biking and mountain biking, or you can revive your climbing abilities on the nearby slopes of the Ardennes! Since 2020, there has been a highly valued mountain bike training centre in Kalterherberg. If you cannot bring your own bikes, you can rent them at the tourist information in the village.

Nearby, you will find several reservoirs, where you can swim and practice other water sports. In winter, you can do winter sports. When there is enough snow, cross-country skiing trails are drawn all over the area and a 15-minute drive away is the alpine slope of Ovifat where you can go tobogganing and downhill skiing. (They have snow cannons there.)

The High Fens

The High Fens have a climate all their own; the average temperature is 5 degrees lower than in the rest of Belgium or the Netherlands. As a result, you will find special plants and animals you will not find elsewhere.

There are several nature centres in the area, where you can get information about the special nature of this rugged area and from where many guided walks also depart. There are walks with various themes, from herbs to mushrooms and from beaver tracks to the special bog flora.

Winters are also colder and therefore the chances of snow are much higher. Snow does fall every winter, sometimes a lot.

In our 'Ferienhaus am Hohen Venn' you will find lots of information about the area and what is worth discovering.

More information and links can be found on the page about the area.

Nice towns, like Monschau or Malmedy

Monschau met de Roer

Of course, one of the favourites remains Monschau, located in a deep valley on the River Ruhr. With its timber-framed houses, it attracts many visitors and a visit to the town is highly recommended. You'll find many lovely terraces and quaint shops.

Furthermore, Malmedy, Eupen, Spa and Stavelot are not far from Kalterherberg. If you want to visit a real city, you can easily get to Aachen, including the cathedral, where more than 30 German kings were crowned and which has the well-deserved Unesco World Heritage status. Because of the relics that are kept there, it is also an important place of pilgrimage. And of course Aachen also has many cafés and terraces!

and nature right into your garden!

Kraanvogeltrek

In season (from spring to autumn), you can enjoy red kites daily, sometimes flying very low. Lovely to watch from your terrace, this largest bird of prey in our area!

And of course there are plenty of other (predatory) birds to enjoy as well. Furthermore, from the house you have a chance to see foxes and hares and sometimes roe deer.

Twice a year there is the migration of the cranes: an experience you won't soon forget! For even more wildlife, head to the High Fens, home to wolves and grouse, among others. (Of course, with no guarantee that you will encounter them.) The Eifel, in turn, is home to wild cats and lynxes.

Lac de Robertville

In the Eifel, things are more relaxed, many people are not in such a hurry. So it happens that you have to wait a bit at the village supermarket because the customer in front of you is having a chat with the cashier. Nobody cares. And that's quite nice actually!

So whether you are looking for an active holiday full of adventure or just want to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, our holiday home offers the perfect setting for your holiday in Monschau, Eifel and High Fens. Check our availability and book your stay today.

Nature in your garden

In the season (from March until well into autumn), you can enjoy red kites every day, sometimes flying very low in their search for prey. Wonderful to watch, just from the terrace, this largest bird of prey in our area!

And of course there are also plenty of other birds to enjoy, like the cranes that pass over Kalterherberg twice a year, a spectacular sight! You have a good chance of seeing foxes and roe deer from your window.
